I took my seven-year-old to see Frozen 2 today. As the mom of a very bright nine-year-old, who struggles mightily with social nuances and fitting in (to the point that he has clinical anxiety), I’m glad I had tissues.
Frozen 2 is a wonderful story about leaning into your God-given talents, even when that feels scary. If you know a child who has seen the movie, you have a great opportunity to build on four amazing lessons:

- Listen to your true calling – When you hear a little voice trying to nudge you along and guide you, don’t ignore it. That’s your inner north star; your authentic self, who wants to break free! Pay attention and honor it. As the saying goes, the journey may not be easy, but it will be worth it.
- Do the next “right” thing – When we feel uncertain about the future, don’t overthink the situation to the point of indecision. Keep moving forward, even if you take what only seems like baby steps. When you break Life down into smaller, more digestible actions, the next “right” move (and the one after that) start to reveal themselves.
- Don’t vilify someone for having talents you don’t understand – Just because someone has unusual abilities, that doesn’t mean it’s okay to belittle her. It simply means she has talents that aren’t common. And that’s okay! The world would be a pretty boring place if we were all the same.

- There is greatness within each of us – Some individuals have what may seem like super powers, while other people’s gifts take a bit longer to see, like an incredible amount of courage or empathy or determination. All of these strengths are wonderful, and when we combine them to work toward a common goal, we can move mountains – and water!
Stepping into your power
The lyrics of Show Yourself, which Elsa sings in the movie, beautifully describe the moment she finally embraces – and begins to fully understand – her true purpose:
Every inch of me is trembling
But not from the cold
Something is familiar
Like a dream I can reach, but not quite hold
I can sense you there
Like a friend I’ve always known
I’m arriving
And it feels like I am home
I have always been a fortress
Cold secrets deep inside
You have secrets, too
But you don’t have to hide
Show yourself
I’m dying to meet you
Show yourself
It’s your turn
Are you the one I’ve been looking for
All of my life?
Show yourself
I’m ready to learn

I’ve never felt so certain
All my life I’ve been torn
But I’m here for a reason
Could it be the reason I was born?
I have always been so different
Normal rules did not apply
Is this the day?
Are you the way
I finally find out why?
Show yourself
I’m no longer trembling
Here I am
I’ve come so far
You are the answer I’ve waited for
All of my life
Oh, show yourself
Let me see who you are
Come to me now
Open your door
Don’t make me wait
One moment more
Oh, come to me now
Open your door
Don’t make me wait
One moment more
Where the north wind meets the sea
There’s a river
Full of memory (memory, memory)
Come, my darling, homeward bound
I am found
Show yourself
Step into the power
Throw yourself
Into something new
You are the one you’ve been waiting for
All of my life (all of your life)
Oh, show yourself
What a wonderful message for kids and adults. I hope you see the movie if you haven’t already done so. 🙂
